They also know what types of protective gear to use, and this will save you from being killed by something that you probably could have prevented if you used the proper personal protective equipment while you were under the water.

I want to give you a couple of examples of exactly what I mean by dangerous. The most obvious danger is that you could become permanently blinded in water if you are welding on something that is very bright. I know that when I am working up in the West Pacific I can see yellow and orange lights that are warning me to stay away from certain areas, but sometimes when I am down in the Caribbean I don't even see the signs. A welder can get this type of damage to their eyes in one of two ways. Either they are standing too close to a metal object, or they are breathing in too much of the smoke that is produced during the welding process. Both of these are very dangerous because welder's eyes are very sensitive to damage.

Another danger is that if the welder is not careful they could come in contact with earth lead, which is highly toxic. Earth lead is one of the most poisonous metals in the water, and a worker that come in contact with it can easily become fatally ill. Many of the marine diving and construction workers that regularly come in contact with earth lead suffer from acute cases of lead poisoning and it is a big problem because they need to use metal electrodes for their jobs. So we have just two of the potential problems that can occur when welding generators are being used on the open water.

In all cases it is safer for welders to bring a portable dry welding equipment with them, rather than using gas welding equipment. These types of units are not designed for the constant exposure to water, so they are not as safe as we would like for welders to believe. As a result, when you are doing any type of welding work you really do need to make sure that you understand exactly what you are getting into before you start any project. You will definitely want to consult with your employer and a qualified professional before you go out on your own and you should know that using a wet welding process is generally dangerous.
